Phlebotomist Technician Course Description
This course is designed for health care students and
practitioners, who are responsible for blood and specimen collections (i.e., nurses,
phlebotomists, clinical laboratory technicians and technologists, respiratory therapists
and others. The primary goal of the course is to link the phlebotomist (blood collector)
to the latest information, techniques, skills, and equipment for the provision of safe and
effective collection procedures, for the improvement of diagnostic and therapeutic
laboratory testing, for enhancement of customer satisfaction, and ultimately, for the
promotion of better health outcomes. This course provides a wide range of competencies,
including communication, clinical, technical, and safety skills that any health care
worker will use in the practice of phlebotomy and other specimen collection procedures.
Phlebotomist Technician Course: This course will provide
students with the necessary knowledge required tp pass a national Certification Exam.
There are five modules to complete before clinical rotations can commence. Clinical
rotations will consist of 30 hours in a healthcare setting that collects blood from
patients.
Objectives
Upon completion of the Phlebotomist Technician Course,
the student will be able to:
- Describe various health care settings; both inpatient and
ambulatory, where phlebotomy services are routinely performed.
- Understand the importance of phlebotomy procedures to the
overall care of the patient.
- Describe the directional terms, anatomic surface regions,
and cavities of the body.
- Describe the phases and role of homeostasis in the normal
body functioning.
- Describe the purpose, function, and structural components
of the 11 body systems.
- Locate and name the veins most commonly used fro
phlebotomy procedures.
- Identify the basic programs for infection control.
- Describe the safe use of equipment in health care
facilities.
- Describe the essential elements of requisition, report
forms and commonly methods to transport specimens.
- Identify the types of equipment needed to collect blood by
Venipuncture.
- Demonstrate the various Venipuncture procedures.
- Pass a National Certification Exam.
