Administrative Medical Specialist/Certified Medical Assistant CMS Billing & Coding


According to the 2002/2003 Occupational Outlook Handbook, medical billing is among the ten fastest growing occupations in the United States!

Every healthcare provider must submit proper documentation to insurance companies for reimbursement, creating numerous opportunities for trained individuals in medical offices, clinics, and hospitals, as well as home based employment.

Currently, there is tremendous demand for individuals with knowledge of medical office operations, billing, and coding. This class imparts a working knowledge of medical billing and reimbursement and the national diagnostic and procedural coding systems. This 130-hour course imparts a working knowledge of medical billing and coding as well as an introduction to medical office computer software. Upon successful completion of the Administrative Medical Specialist course, students will be prepared for an entry-level position doing medical billing or coding in a medical office setting.

 

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should:

  • Be prepared for an entry-level medical billing or coding position in a medical office setting.
  • Have a working knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Have an understanding of medical billing procedures.
  • Have an understanding of ICD-9 and CPT-4 Coding.
  • Be prepared to take an Advanced Coding course to prepare for national certification.

 

Prerequisites:

 

Students should be proficient in keyboarding, have a basic understanding of a word processing computer program (Microsoft Word recommended), and have a command of English grammar and punctuation. No healthcare or medical office work experience is required.

The target audience for the Administrative Medical Specialist course is individuals interested in learning job skills for medical office opportunities, changing job skills to become medical office assistants, or changing job skills to become medical coders.
